Quick update

For our trip up to Fiji we’ll be posting in English so the Davies family, for the first time can actually understand what is posted. A quick update. Washing machine, although dented, works like a dream. Today, with a little stomach ache, we bought a new fifteen horse Yamaha. It is beautiful and d...

Sunday morning?

Yesterday was a beautiful day. The sun was shining and we got everything sorted in the boat. We had fish and chips with Tegan and her family and Sharon and Jon came by to discuss the last details about food and such. This morning when we woke up rain was pouring down. Today we'll be shopping for ...

Delayed

The plan was to leave the docks this morning at 5.45 am to meet customs at 6.00 am. After a long evening of final preparations we were officially ready to leave for Fiji. We set the alarms for 05:30 this morning and tucked in for a short night.

The plan was to leave the docks this morning at 0...

Departure

We are clearing customs at 18:00 tonight. It looks like a nice quick sail through the night, and an awesome sail the coming days. On the "positie" page on the website you can follow our progress. Twice a day there will be a position update.

19 April 2011, 9pm (Jon)

Good evening to all the supporters of Elena. Currently a little more than 160 nautical miles out of Auckland. Sitting on a steady 6+ knots under spinnaker/Parasailor with 15 knots of wind from astern. A very quiet day on board with only the Dutch team staying strong against seasickness. Team ...

20 April 2011, 11pm (Leonie)

The good news is that Kent and Nathan are back to normal again. The bad news is that Sharon hasn't recovered from her seasickness yet. She is doing miles better than yesterday, but is not back to normal yet. This morning Mees threw up totally unexpected. Strangely enough, that was all it took, af...

21 April 2011, 9pm (Jon)

One hour into a 3 hour watch, I have spent the first hour watching the stars, and a moon-rise which could have been mistaken for a sunrise coming from below the horizon. Under full sail comfortably at 8 - 10 knots over the past 4 hours, sea slight, reaching in 20 knots true. Balanced rudder -...

22 April 2011, flying: 193nm/24hr (Adam)

We have been flying the past night and day. The wind just over a 90 degree angle, moderate seas and around 20-30 knots of breeze are enough to send Elena racing off the waves (and sometimes through). We managed a 193nm run in 24 hours and that is in Elena's top 10 quickest days until now. We ...

23 April 2011, still flying (Leonie)

We are still making good progress towards Fiji. We have covered 388 miles in the past 48 hours. The waves have been building and we were healing over quite a bit. Nobody slept very well and life on board was a bit of a challenge today. Opening the fridge door was an event, which required careful ...

24 April 2011, some turbulence but flying! (Jon)

The past 24 hours have seen another 200 miles go by (well almost 200). The wind has increased a little over the day and the sea is now lumpy. The occasional wave manages to send a refreshing shower into the cockpit, which is unwelcome if you've just spent time showering under buckets in the s...

25 April 2011, Fiji! (Adam)

We have made it safely through the pass into the protected lagoon of Viti Levu, Fiji! As always the last little leads weighed heaviest. It was a rough night. Leonie had 40 knots of breeze, Jon had uncharted reefs, and I had a ship that came out of a rain cloud and lightning right over our hea...

27 April 2011, Bounty Island (Sharon)

So it is about time the 'silent' member of the crew finally blogs - after 9 days, 7 of those being the toughest I have had (36 hours of child birth had an end - 7 days of constant sea sickness which felt like it really would never end), I am finally feeling back to normal and trying to catchu...

29 April, Thunder all through the night (Leonie)

Since we got to Fiji, we've had thunderstorms every night in every direction, but mostly far off. Last night and the night before we had some squalls with up to 38 knots of wind. The anchor alarm went off once (thankfully false alarm) and Adam and I got out of bed several times to check that our ...
